In May 2023, a resolution may be submitted to the UN General Assembly recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. This would be a significant step in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, as it would give Palestine more power and influence in international affairs.
However, it’s important to note that similar resolutions have been blocked by the United States in the past. The decisions made by the General Assembly are advisory and do not automatically result in the creation of a Palestinian state. Nevertheless, many believe that an overwhelming majority of UN members will vote in support of the resolution.
If this were to happen, Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that the United States should consider stopping funding to the international organization if it is adopted. This is similar to what was done with UNESCO when they granted full membership status to the Palestinian Authority.
It’s important to remember that back in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared independence from Israel. While many countries recognized this declaration immediately after its announcement, it did not lead to any concrete action or recognition from Israel. Despite this setback, many continue to hope for a peaceful solution to one of history’s most complex conflicts.
