Unlicensed Injectors Cause Harm with Counterfeit Botox in the US

In recent months, health officials in the US have issued a warning about counterfeit Botox injections that have caused harm to more than 20 individuals. According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), half of these individuals required hospitalization after receiving the injections.

The CDC has alerted doctors about this issue, which began in early November and has been reported in 11 states. These injections were administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals, often in settings such as homes or spas. Most of those affected got the injections for cosmetic reasons.

Six people have been treated for suspected botulism, a serious illness caused by botulinum toxin entering the bloodstream. Symptoms of botulism include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. Health officials are emphasizing the importance of receiving injections only from licensed professionals and reporting any suspected counterfeit products.
