Unlocking Educational Opportunities: The USNCC and Western Governors University Partnership for Health Science Enhancements in the Navy

Sailors who are interested in pursuing a career in health science now have the opportunity to apply for the U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC) program. The USNCC, which launched last fall after starting in 2019, is part of a broader effort to enhance educational offerings for enlisted sailors within the Navy. The college has partnered with Western Governors University to offer an associate degree in health science that covers aspects such as health science management, planning, coordination, processes, and protocols.

According to Randi Cosentino, president of the USNCC, medical roles are critical within the fleet and this expertise is vital for various military specialties and humanitarian missions. This degree is designed to be completed fully online, allowing sailors to further their education and potentially pursue careers as Hospital Corpsmen or Health Services Technicians. Once sailors earn their associate degree through the USNCC, they have the opportunity to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain their bachelor’s degree using their tuition assistance or GI Bill credits.

Julia Gage, director of military engagement at Western Governors University, highlighted the flexibility and speed at which students can progress through the degree program. The USNCC was established as part of former Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer’s “Education for Seapower” campaign to enhance the Navy’s intellectual advancement. The community college launched its first pilot program in January 2021 and plans to be fully operational by 2028 with up to 25 different areas of study available.

The establishment of this college marks an important step towards providing more educational opportunities for enlisted sailors within the Navy. It provides them with a chance to gain valuable knowledge and skills that will help them excel in their careers while also advancing their education towards a bachelor’s degree if desired.

As we look ahead into future years, it is clear that this college will continue playing an integral role in shaping our naval force’s workforce by equipping them with essential knowledge and skills necessary for success on board ships and ashore.

Overall, this partnership between the USNCC and Western Governors University represents an important milestone in enhancing educational opportunities for enlisted sailors within the Navy. With its focus on providing high-quality education that meets specific military needs, this college will undoubtedly make a significant impact on our navy’s overall capabilities.

In conclusion, sailors who are interested in studying health science now have an excellent opportunity through USNCC’s program that offers flexible online courses covering aspects such as health science management
