Newly captured image shows strong magnetic fields surrounding the black hole at the center of the Milky Way

In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists working with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) have revealed the presence of powerful and organized magnetic fields spiraling from the edge of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. This new image provides crucial insight into the magnetic field structure around Sgr A*, which appears strikingly similar to that of the black hole in the galaxy M87.

This finding, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, involved a collaboration of over 300 researchers from around the world. In 2022, scientists released the first image of Sgr A* at press conferences worldwide, revealing striking similarities with M87 despite their differences in size and mass. To further investigate these similarities, the team studied Sgr A* in polarized light, leading to this remarkable discovery.

Imaging black holes with polarized light is challenging due to their quick changes, making it difficult to capture detailed photos. However, through sophisticated tools and a global network of telescopes, including EHT’s Earth-sized virtual telescope, scientists were able to observe Sgr A* in 2017.

This study suggests that both black holes have strong magnetic fields, indicating that this may be a fundamental characteristic of all black holes. While a visible jet was observed at M87, no such jet has yet been found at Sgr A*. This research contributes significantly to our understanding of magnetic fields and structures around black holes and sheds valuable light on these enigmatic cosmic objects.

The discovery highlights the importance of continued research on this topic as we continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding these fascinating celestial bodies.
