Recap of Copa América 2024: Mexico’s experiment falls short as Venezuela and Ecuador advance from Group B

Venezuela has won the group at Copa América for just the second time ever, with their first win in 2007. This marks the first time they have won all three of their group stage matches. Salomón Rondón, Venezuela’s all-time leading scorer, scored his 43rd international goal, more than the rest of the squad combined.

Ecuador has now reached the quarterfinals at three of the last four editions of Copa América, after going out in the group stage at six straight tournaments. Mexico was eliminated from Copa América after a scoreless draw with Ecuador on Sunday at State Farm Stadium. This is Mexico’s third failure to advance when needing a win in the final group game.

Jamaica has still not earned a point at Copa América and is winless in nine games, with Venezuela leading the all-time matchup between them. Ecuador and Mexico have met four times in Copa América, with Mexico leading the all-time matchup.
