The proportion of women working as scientists and engineers varies significantly between different sectors. While the service sector has 46% of women in these roles, the manufacturing sector only has 22% of female scientists and engineers.
In terms of EU Member States, Latvia stands out as a leader in the proportion of women employed in science and technology occupations. This includes a range of jobs related to scientific knowledge generation, advancement, diffusion, and application, as well as related professions like technicians or associated professionals.
A recent study found that the highest shares of women employed in science and technology occupations were observed in Lithuania, the French region of Corse, and Latvia. On the other hand, regions with lower proportions of females employed in science and technology were recorded in Italy’s Nord-Ovest region, Malta, and Italy’s Sud region. This data was released to coincide with International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th.
