The Tower of the Americas grounds in San Antonio is set to receive a new design, with Hemisfair planning to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the pond at the base of the structure. This project is part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair and has philanthropic support for funding.
Hemisfair first introduced the first phase of Civic Park last fall, which added green space to the grounds west of the tower. Feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces led to this new pavilion. The existing pond, which has been in place since 1988, has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors and will be replaced by the new structure.
While renderings of the project are not yet available, the pavilion will consist of a concrete slab primarily used as a basketball court. It will feature a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. The space will also be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes.
