The community of Cumming is set to host its first Mental Health Summit this month, with plans to make it an annual event. May is recognized as mental health awareness month by various national organizations, and Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow intends to declare the month as such at an upcoming city council meeting. The goal of the summit is to break down barriers, promote understanding, and create a supportive environment for conversations about mental health in the community.
The summit will take place on Monday, May 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center on Ronald Reagan Parkway. It will be organized by the Forsyth County Mental Health & Wellness Advocates group. Among the speakers at the event will be Maureen Bixler, LCSW at Live Life Counseling, former Georgia State Representative Mike Dudgeon, Commissioner Cindy Mills, and a special resident testimony. They will address the mental health challenges faced by youth in schools and the wellness needs of the community.
This year’s summit will focus on “Faces of Mental Health,” aiming to shed light on the various aspects of mental health in the community. The organizers hope that by coming together and engaging in discussions, they can positively impact the well-being of the community and encourage open conversations about mental health.
