Tessa Sermet, an Assistant Professor of French at XYZ University, recently co-edited the publication of “Continuum: French Science Fiction Short Stories” by Ooligan Press. This collection features a mix of classic and contemporary French science fiction stories that have been translated into English for a wider audience to enjoy. The stories cover various themes such as simulated reality, speciesism, ecology, and transhumanism.
Sermet was motivated to curate this anthology because she noticed a lack of French science fiction translated into English. She wanted to offer readers a more modern collection than what was currently available. By selecting stories from different authors, time periods, and subjects, Sermet and co-editor Annabelle Dolidon aimed to create a diverse and engaging anthology for English-speaking audiences.
As part of their collaboration on the project, Sermet not only co-edited the collection but also translated two of the stories. This was her first experience translating fiction, and she found it to be a rewarding challenge due to the distinct styles and eras of the stories she worked on.
In addition to the translated stories, each section of the anthology includes an “Expansion” segment that provides readers with more information about the authors and offers discussion questions that can be used in academic settings or book club discussions.
