During a visit to Fort William for the World Cup pits, we had the chance to witness the latest technology and bikes being used by top downhill mountain bikers. Factory team riders such as Greg Minnaar, Tahnee Seagrave, and Nina Hoffmann have access to a dedicated mechanic, team manager, chef, and sports massage therapist for support. These riders also have spare bikes on hand in case of emergencies.
On the other hand, there are around 80 privateers who take on multiple roles while competing in the event. While they may not have access to the latest technology, their bikes have likely seen more descending than any factory team rider’s bike. Despite not having all the high-tech gear, these privateers work hard to compete at their best in the competition.
What sets these privateers apart is their dedication to their craft and passion for the sport. Each one has a unique story about their favorite thing about their bike that showcases their resilience and spirit as they take on the challenges of competitive downhill mountain biking in Fort William.
