In preparation for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, the Indianapolis Colts, USA Swimming, and Indiana Sports Corp hosted a half-day event called “Under The Surface” at Colts headquarters last week. During this event, 150 local high school students learned about the intersection of mental health and sports through an activity fair and a panel discussion featuring successful athletes and professionals in the field.
Special guests included Olympic gold medalist Lilly King, U.S. swimmer Ashley Twichell, Colts Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II, and Colts Vice Chair & Owner Kalen Jackson. These students, representing 11 area high schools, are involved in Bring Change to Mind (BC2M), a national organization with chapters in Indiana schools that aim to end the stigma surrounding mental illnesses.
The event took place at Lucas Oil Stadium during off-season hours on Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Fans can also purchase Kicking The Stigma gear at the Colts Pro Shop to support the Kicking The Stigma Action Grants. Items available for purchase include a hoodie with the message “Not All Pain Can Be Seen,” a tee that says “I Am Stronger than My Darkest Days,” as well as wristbands, pins, and tumblers.
