Dr. Peter Licata, the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, announced his resignation during a school board meeting. Citing health concerns, Licata stated that he has been undergoing treatment for a medical condition for several months. After discussing his decision with his family, including his wife and four adult children, and consulting with his doctors, Licata decided it was best to retire from his role as an educator after over 30 years in South Florida.
Following Licata’s resignation, the Board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. Hepburn will take over as superintendent on January 1st, 2022. This marks the end of Licata’s tenure as superintendent and the beginning of Broward County Public Schools’ search for its fourth superintendent in four years.
Licata expressed gratitude for the community’s trust and support throughout his time as superintendent. He believes that Broward County Public Schools is on track for even greater accomplishments in the future. With Licata’s last day set for December 31st, BCPS will begin its search for a new leader to guide the district into the future.
