Top Athletes in Somerset County for Spring Sports May 6-11

In Monday’s baseball action, Somerset defeated Richland 18-5 with a strong performance from Callen Miller who recorded five hits, including a home run and five RBIs. Lane Lambert also had a big game with two hits, including a home run and five RBIs. Carter Dunmyer added three hits, and Braeden Flower struck out 10 over six innings. Conemaugh Township secured a 7-5 victory over Cambria Heights thanks to Larry Weaver’s two hits, including a home run and two RBIs. D.J. Bambino drove in two runs, while Luke Weber and Brennan Lohr each contributed two hits for Conemaugh Township.

In tennis, Somerset’s Cornelius Grau and Josiah Antram won the District 5-2A doubles championship by defeating Tussey Mountain’s Luke Barnett and Nolan May 6-1, 6-2. Windber defeated Ferndale 12-2 in six innings, with Lucas Oleksa hitting a 3-run home run and tallying four RBIs. Lucas Rummel and Nathan Betcher also had strong performances for Windber. Despite a 10-2 loss to Hancock, Turkeyfoot Valley saw Bryce Nicholson with two hits and Gavin Culp with an RBI single.

In football, Greensburg Central Catholic defeated North Allegheny High School in the WPIAL Class AA Championship Game with a final score of 48-38. The team was led by Tyler Smith who scored three touchdowns and recorded over 200 yards rushing on just nine carries. Nick Mastronardi also had an impressive game with over 150 yards rushing on just eight carries, including two touchdowns.
