Business Owners Concerned as Property Crimes on the Rise in DOCO

Business owners in Dougherty County have expressed concerns about the increase in property crimes in the area, which they attribute to individuals arrested and released on bond. The District Attorney, Greg Edwards, has addressed these concerns, noting that some of the crimes businesses are experiencing more frequently include burglary and damage to property.

Edwards has identified a contributing factor to this increase in crime as a policy implemented at the magistrate court level, which allows individuals arrested for misdemeanor offenses, particularly theft, to be reconsidered for release on their own recognizance (OR) if they are unable to make bond and remain in jail for 10 days. The District Attorney emphasizes the importance of prevention in order to protect businesses in the area.

To address this issue, Edwards is urging business owners and victims to speak out and inform the court about the impact these crimes have on their interests. He has received complaints about this issue from both sides of Albany and is concerned that if the situation continues, businesses may not want to remain in the area.

Edwards stresses that prevention is key to protecting businesses from property crimes. He encourages business owners and victims to speak out and inform the court about the impact of these crimes on their interests so that appropriate measures can be taken to prevent future incidents.
