James Whomsley, a renowned British YouTube host with an engineering channel, recently made history by building the world’s largest remote-controlled aircraft carrier model. The feat was confirmed by Guinness World Records. This impressive accomplishment was not the only one for Whomsley – he also managed to land two remote control model planes on the carrier, earning him another world record in the process.
The construction of this massive aircraft carrier model took Whomsley three months to complete using a combination of wood, foam, and fiberglass. To ensure its durability and functionality, expanding foam was utilized to make the carrier waterproof. Once finished, Whomsley had to learn how to operate the remote-controlled planes and make modifications to both the planes and the carrier to successfully land them.
Whomsley described the experience of bringing his idea to life as “amazing”. In order to facilitate better visibility during landing, he added first-person view cameras to the model aircraft. The model planes used in the project were modified ready-to-fly models. Testing flights and landings were carried out at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire, where one of the planes crashed into the water during testing.
