UNM Newsroom: College of Education & Human Sciences receives praise in latest state-sponsored evaluation

The College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) at the University of New Mexico recently welcomed two Teacher Preparation Inspection evaluators (TPI-US) as part of the State of New Mexico’s literacy pilot program. The goal of the program is to enhance literacy outcomes for New Mexican students by assessing the COEHS across three domains: teaching the science of reading, students’ literacy instruction in field sites, and partnerships within the community and school districts.

During their visit to the college in the week of April 21, the inspectors engaged in observations, interviews, and reviews of syllabi to assess how well the college prepares its graduates to support students in mastering literacy. Preliminary findings highlighted the strength of the COEHS teacher preparation programs, commending the evidence-based coursework, field experiences, and partnerships with schools that facilitate the enactment of literacy science in New Mexico classrooms.

The report acknowledged that COEHS stands out as a leader in teaching the science of reading to teacher candidates, with a unique commitment that exceeds standards seen elsewhere in the country. The feedback from TPI inspectors on April 26 lauded COEHS for its profound institution and program, emphasizing its significant influence on schools. A second site visit is scheduled for next academic year with a formal evaluation expected in months ahead. The visit aimed to provide an independent assessment of COEHS’ commitment to evidence-based practices and structured literacy – a goal that aligns with efforts to improve literacy outcomes for New Mexican students.
