Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, faced a minor setback on Thursday when he arrived at his local polling station without official identification, according to Sky News.
Although Johnson had introduced a law requiring voters to show official documentation for identification during his time as Prime Minister, he reportedly forgot this law and was asked to leave the polling station. However, Johnson’s spokesman stated that he was eventually able to cast his vote.
The law, which was enacted in 2022, mandates that individuals provide official photo identification such as a passport or driver’s license when voting. Critics argue that this requirement disproportionately affects poorer and older individuals as well as members of minority groups who may be less likely to possess such ID.
Despite the mishap, Johnson had encouraged voters in the morning to support the Conservative Party, led by his successor Rishi Sunak.
