Trey Augustine to Lead Team USA at World Championship representing MSU

MSU men’s hockey team will have Trey Augustine representing USA Hockey at the upcoming World Championship. The 19-year-old goalie and Detroit Red Wings prospect was added to the roster on Sunday, replacing Detroit forward Dylan Larkin due to injury.

Augustine, a South Lyon native, is a product of the USA Hockey Development Program and was selected by Detroit in the second round in 2023. He quickly became a fan favorite at Michigan State, where he spent two full seasons before joining USA Hockey. During his time with MSU, Augustine earned Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors, as well as Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and Most Valuable Player award from his team. In 35 games, he posted three shutouts, a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average.

Detroit is well represented by USA Hockey as Augustine joins Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon and defenseman Jeff Petry on the roster. Derek Lalonde is head coach of the team while Alex Westlund serves as their goaltending coach. Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA backstopping the national team to a gold medal in the IIHF World Junior Tournament.

It is a significant recognition for Augustine who will be leaving behind his Division One national title push to represent his country May 10-26 in Ostrava and Prague, Czechia at the upcoming World Championship.
