Friedman’s Shoes, a family-owned men and ladies shoe store located at 209 Mitchell Street SW in Downtown Atlanta, has been open for 95 years. Since its inception in 1929, the business has been a staple of the community. The store is well known among athletes for its selection of plus-size shoes, which has even earned them a spot on ESPN’s 30 for 30.
Owner Brett Teilhaber shares his family’s long history with the store and their excitement about the future of South Downtown. The business was originally founded by Brett’s grandfather as a shoe repair shop in 1929, and it was later purchased by his father in the 70s. Today, all four sons work in the family business along with a total of eight employees.
Friedman’s Shoes carries sizes ranging from 7-22 in men’s sizes and 7-14 in ladies sizes. While they are best known for their large size shoes, they also carry all sizes for both men and women. In addition to their brick-and-mortar store, they also sell their products online through LargeFeet.com.
Teilhaber says that being located in Downtown Atlanta was a family affair and that he loves seeing the area once again become the heartbeat of the city. He has fond memories of coming Downtown to watch games for various sports teams such as Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Flames/Thrashers during his lifetime. He is especially excited about projects like Centennial Yards where old railroad buildings are being revitalized. This ongoing development gives him high hopes for the future of Downtown Atlanta
