Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine is a major security threat to Europe, according to Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens). In a video posted on Friday, Habeck expressed his belief that there will not be a quick and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Habeck acknowledged the longing for peace but emphasized the importance of Germany investing in its own security to protect against potential military attacks. He noted that Russia is shifting to a war economy and increasing weapons production, making the situation even more dangerous.
While acknowledging concerns about the escalation of war, Habeck underlined the necessity of addressing the threat posed by Putin’s aggression. He rejected the idea of “freezing” the conflict, arguing that only Ukrainians can decide on the terms of a ceasefire or an end to the war.
Habeck called for a comprehensive approach to tackling the crisis, emphasizing the need for continued engagement and support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He recognized differing perspectives on the issue but highlighted the importance of unity and solidarity in the fight for peace and security in Europe.
