In 2023, human rights violations occurred in 155 countries worldwide. This report examines the interconnectedness of global and regional issues and their implications for the future. It highlights instances where both states and armed groups have violated the rules of war, with racism playing a central role in some conflicts and responses to them. Furthermore, marginalized communities have been disproportionately affected by economic crises, climate change, and environmental degradation.
Human rights defenders advocating for the rights of these marginalized communities have faced targeted repression as part of a broader crackdown on dissent. The backlash against women’s, girls’, and LGBTI individuals’ rights has grown, while online platforms have seen an increase in harmful content targeting specific racialized groups. Advances in artificial intelligence have also been leveraged to restrict freedoms and infringe upon human rights.
