A diverse group of political, business, and philanthropic leaders will convene in New York on May 1 and 2 for the Global Citizen NOW summit, including Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg. The summit aims to address issues of food insecurity, climate change, and public health associated with extreme poverty, seeking support for workable solutions.
Among the attendees are actors Hugh Jackman, Danai Gurira, and Dakota Johnson, along with representatives from companies like Cisco, Citi, Delta, and PayPal. The event will also feature figures such as Rockefeller Foundation President Rajiv Shah, Bezos Earth Fund CEO Andrew Steer, and Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The focus of the summit will be on defeating preventable diseases like malaria, polio, and HPV through new initiatives to preserve the Amazon Rainforest and increase investments in Africa through the World Bank. The organization also aims to inspire and support the next generation of advocates through the Global Citizen Prize awards.
The nonprofit’s CEO Hugh Evans emphasized the urgency of action to end extreme poverty. “We are at a critical juncture,” he stated. “It’s time we come together as a global community to take action against these pressing challenges.”
Michelle Yeoh expressed her dedication to addressing food insecurity by highlighting its impact on children’s growth and development. She urged leaders to prioritize sustainable agriculture practices that can improve people’s lives while protecting the environment.
Danai Gurira dedicated herself to amplifying underrepresented voices particularly addressing severe inequities facing Africa continent “Let us all be committed to creating a world where no one is left behind.” she said .
