Former Stanford president receives National Science Board award

Dario Gil, the chair of the Board’s External Engagement Committee and the senior vice president and director of IBM research, expressed excitement over John Hennessy being selected for the Vannevar Bush Award this year. The prestigious award, named after Vannevar Bush, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to science and technology throughout their lives, as stated on the NSB website.

Hennessy’s groundbreaking work in computer architecture and his commitment to developing the future STEM workforce, both of which align with the values of Vannevar Bush, were praised by Gil. In addition, Hennessy’s research has had positive impacts on the national economy and security.

Vannevar Bush was a prominent figure who led the U.S Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II and played a key role in establishing the National Science Foundation. He inspired many with his dedication to advancing science and technology. In a statement released by the NSB, Hennessy echoed Bush’s belief that science is the new frontier with countless questions waiting to be answered, especially regarding the mysteries of life and the universe.

Currently, Hennessy holds positions as the chairperson of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and the Shriram Family Director of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program at Stanford University. The Vannevar Bush Award will be formally presented to him on May 1, 2024, at the National Science Foundation Awards Gala taking place at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.
