Cubs promote Mervis and Wesneski to major leagues

According to a report by Tommy Birch, the Cubs have called up Matt Mervis and Hayden Wesneski. The news was announced by Birch, a beat reporter covering the Iowa Cubs, on Tuesday morning. As of now, no corresponding moves have been made yet.

Mervis is returning to the North Side after a short stint last summer that included 97 at-bats. The former Duke product impressed the club by performing well at three different levels in 2022, which earned him the team’s Minor League Player of the Year award. This year in Iowa, he has continued his strong performance, slashing .288/.402/.606 with five home runs.

There is speculation that Ian Happ may be one of the corresponding moves for Mervis and Wesneski. Happ left Friday’s game against the Marlins due to hamstring tightness. The Marlins went on to beat the Cubs 6-3, resulting in a 4-game series split.

Wesneski was recently called up for a day last week and threw four scoreless innings in relief against the Diamondbacks. The Cubs are set to host the struggling Astros for a three-game series starting at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
