Following the events of October 7, Aharon Haliva, the head of the Israeli Army’s Intelligence services, has announced his resignation. He cited his responsibility for the attacks carried out by Hamas as a reason for his departure. In his resignation letter, Haliva admitted that the Intelligence Division was not adequately equipped for the task at hand and acknowledged the weight of the responsibility entrusted to him.
Haliva has called for an investigation to examine the security failures surrounding the attacks. The decision to resign has been approved by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Haliva will continue in his role until a replacement is appointed in an orderly manner. The Israeli Army praised Haliva’s dedication during his 38 years of service and his contributions to national security.
Haliva’s resignation marks a significant event as it is the first time a high-ranking official in Israel has resigned due to security failures. Following his resignation, opposition leader Yair Lapid has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to follow suit. Lapid emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for failures, as demonstrated by Haliva.
