John Hynes, coach of the Wild, to lead U.S. team at world championships

The 2024 U.S. men’s national team has appointed John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild as their coach for the upcoming IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia, which is set to take place from May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava. USA Hockey announced this on Friday. Hynes, who last coached the national team in 2019, recently completed his first season as the head coach of the Wild in the NHL, falling short of making the playoffs. Brett Peterson, general manager of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team and a member of Florida Panthers’ management team, expressed confidence in Hynes’ leadership. Peterson highlighted Hynes’ passion, energy and extensive experience in coaching particularly on the world stage as key strengths that will benefit the national team in their quest for gold. Hynes is a native of Warwick Rhode Island and has a long standing history with USA Hockey having served as head coach for national team development program from 2003-2009. A former player at Boston University he also has personal success in collegiate hockey competing in four NCAA Frozen Fours securing a championship win in 1995 .
