Exploring the Globe: A Night of Math and Science Around the World

The Around the World with Math and Science Night was a resounding success at Klager Elementary School on April 26. This event, organized by a dedicated team of volunteers from Klager and high schools, provided families with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning opportunities in the school’s cafeteria.

Children were treated to an array of interactive and engaging activities that showcased various aspects of learning from different cultures around the world. They learned about the science of growing food in the Arctic, the discovery of popcorn in Peru, and the invention of sorbet in China. Through robotics demonstrations by the Klager K-12 robotics teams, children also got to engage with technology. Additionally, they practiced their engineering skills with K’Nex, an American invention.

Families were also given the chance to attend an art show and create their own notebooks as a make-and-take activity. This product originally comes from Australia. Children also applied their math skills through a game challenge called Mancala, which was created in Africa. Title 1 representatives were present to promote reading local Michigan authors and products while MI Future Funds provided information on college planning and savings. At the end of the night, children voted for their favorite station with the Robotics Teams emerging as winners.

Overall, families of all ages had a fantastic time at this event which was both informative and enjoyable. It was an excellent opportunity for children to explore different cultures while learning about various aspects of STEAM education.
