World Cup-winning coach Menotti of Argentina passes away at 85

On Sunday, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) made a heartfelt announcement that Cesar Luis Menotti, the legendary coach who led Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup, had passed away at the age of 85. Menotti’s impact on Argentine football cannot be overstated, as he had a successful playing career with clubs such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, and Santos before transitioning to coaching.

After winning the Argentine championship with Huracan in 1973, Menotti took over as the head coach of the national team in 1974. Under his leadership, Argentina went on to win the World Cup in 1978, a historic moment for the country. After his success with the national team, Menotti had coaching stints with various clubs around the world, including Barcelona where he won the Copa Del Rey in 1983.

Menotti also coached Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Independiente, River Plate, Penarol, Rosario Central, Sampdoria and Mexican sides Puebla and Tecos. The AFA expressed its deep sadness at losing such an influential figure in Argentine football history. They acknowledged his contributions not only as a coach but also as a player and thanked him for all he had done for their sport. His legacy will be remembered fondly by fans and players alike. Farewell Flaco querido.
