According to a recent study by SplitMetrics, mobile users are increasingly relying on their smartphones to manage their professional lives and complete daily tasks. The report revealed that the top apps in the business and productivity categories have collectively accumulated an impressive 4.7 billion and 55 billion downloads, respectively.
In the business category, Microsoft’s LinkedIn is the leader with over 1.5 billion lifetime downloads, followed closely by industry giants such as Zoom (1.1 billion) and Microsoft Teams (426 million). Other notable apps include OfficeSuite (195 million), Indeed (188 million), and Lopay: Payments & POS (339% growth in 2023).
On the productivity front, Google dominates with Google Drive being the most downloaded app of all time with 10 billion lifetime downloads. This is followed by Google Calendar (6 billion), Microsoft OneDrive (4 billion), Google Assistant (3 billion), and Google Keep (2.7 billion). PDF Reader – PDF Viewer experienced significant growth in downloads with a remarkable 701% increase in 2023, while Notepad had a growth of 457%.
Thomas Kriebernegg, General Manager of SplitMetrics, commented on the popularity of tools that aid productivity and effective work management. He noted that user acquisition costs may be higher in the business category but that high engagement levels present substantial market opportunities due to increasing demand for user-friendly business and productivity apps resulting from on-demand services, remote work, and mobile entrepreneurship.
