Nonprofit organization in the community honored as ‘Local Health Champion’

The Momentum Center, a local nonprofit with locations in Grand Haven and Holland, was recently recognized as a Hometown Health Hero by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). This award celebrates individuals and organizations that work tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of residents in Michigan.

Barbara Lee VanHorssen, the director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award on behalf of the organization in Lansing. The center provides a supportive environment for youth over age 11 and adults with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. They offer a variety of social and recreational activities, classes, events, and meals, allowing members to interact without fear of stigma or stereotypes.

The Momentum Center’s mission is to create a space where individuals can come together to improve their overall well-being. The organization was nominated by Cindy Anderson, a resident of Grand Haven. In addition to the Momentum Center, the Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force also received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health within the community.
