Since October 2023, the number of cases of mpox in New York City has been steadily rising. According to a health alert issued by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health) on May 3rd, the average number of cases per month has increased from 2 to 20 prior to 2023, to an average of 36 cases per month since October, with a peak of 51 cases in January. Of the 256 cases reported since October, over three-quarters were unvaccinated or had only received one dose, and nearly all were men who have sex with men.
The majority of these individuals were Black and Hispanic men between the ages of 25 and 44. Most cases were mild, but ten individuals required hospitalization. The healthcare providers in NYC have been urged by NYC Health to continue offering vaccines to at-risk populations, particularly those with HIV or other immunocompromising conditions. The Jynneos vaccine is now available in the commercial market, but federally funded supplies will be available at no cost until early summer.
However, providers must remain vigilant about the risk posed by the more severe clade 1 virus that is currently causing an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). While this strain has not been found outside Africa, healthcare providers should be cautious about individuals who have traveled to or have connections with that region and present with mpox symptoms.
Overall, it is essential for individuals who are not vaccinated or have only received one dose to get their shots as soon as possible to prevent further spread of this disease. Additionally, healthcare providers must remain aware of any potential threats posed by new strains or outbreaks and take appropriate measures to protect their patients’ health.
