The Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park in Huntsville was officially unveiled to the public during a grand opening ceremony attended by leaders from the city, past and present. The $17 million expansion of the facility includes four championship-caliber fields for multipurpose sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee.
The 20-acre complex features two synthetic turf fields and two natural grass fields, complementing the eight synthetic turf fields at the nearby Merrimack Sports Complex. The new addition makes Huntsville an attractive destination for state, regional, and national tournaments while also catering to local sports teams.
Former Mayor Loretta Spencer was honored to cut the ribbon and officially open the new multiuse championship fields at John Hunt Park. She was joined by Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Russell, Mayor Tommy Battle, Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett, Council Members Jennie Robinson and Bill Kling, as well as City Administrator John Hamilton during the ceremony.
Mayor Battle expressed gratitude for Spencer’s vision and leadership in making this fantastic public amenity possible. The facility was named in her honor as a recognition of her dedication to youth sports in Huntsville. With expanded parking and stadium seating for up to 5,000 sports fans, John Hunt Park is poised to offer world-class sports facilities for both championship-level tournaments and local residents.
