Respiratory Therapy Technology Program Now Available at COTC

The Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) in Newark is introducing a new two-year associate degree program in respiratory therapy technology. The program is awaiting accreditation confirmation and classes are set to begin this fall. The application deadline is June 15. COTC has branch campuses in Coshocton, Mount Vernon, and Pataskala.

The need for respiratory therapists in Licking County and the broader medical community has led to the creation of this program. Program director Tyler Richards highlighted the increasing number of retiring therapists compared to new entrants into the workforce. There are currently numerous open positions in hospitals and more are expected as facilities expand.

Respiratory therapists play a crucial role in helping individuals with lung diseases or disorders recover or rehabilitate. They work in various medical settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units, and rehabilitation centers. Graduates of the program will be eligible to pursue the registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Upon completion of the program, graduates can anticipate earning a median wage of $65,760 annually, according to Ohio Labor Market information. Students have the opportunity to apply for a limited permit after one year, allowing them to gain experience in the field and establish connections while supporting themselves financially.

To gain admission to the program, students must submit a free application for admission and a respiratory therapy technology program application. For more details, individuals can visit go.cotc.edu/respiratory or contact COTC’s admissions office at cotcadmissions@mail.cotc
