In April, Oglala Lakota College hosted its annual Reservation Wide Science Fair, which drew over 100 students from across the community. Despite the large number of participants, only 12 projects were completed due to time constraints. From January to April, the students worked tirelessly on their project ideas, conducting research and selecting topics that interested them. They were guided through the process of formulating hypotheses and understanding the scientific method before beginning their experiments.
Despite facing numerous challenges, the Wolf Creek 7-8 grade students displayed remarkable dedication and perseverance in their work. Their projects showcased their impressive research skills, creativity, and scientific talents. The teacher was incredibly proud of their hard work and congratulated them on successfully completing their projects.
The science fair featured a diverse range of topics and experiments, including studies on water quality in Wolf Creek, meat preservation at room temperature, comparisons of different types of gum and potato chips, as well as bacterial growth on various surfaces. Some projects also focused on chemical reactions, such as growing crystals and creating a lava lamp. Additionally, social projects were included in the science fair, with one group testing the effects of kind or harsh language on plant growth. Other projects involved design and engineering, such as building rockets, cardboard hands operated by strings, and experimenting with eggs and vinegar to determine how they reacted. Overall, each project demonstrated the students’ exceptional creativity, critical thinking abilities, and scientific prowess.
