BHS Takes Home Gold in Scrambler Event at State Science Olympiad

This past weekend, the Michigan Science Olympiad took place at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The competition featured teams from all over the state, and despite tough competition, two teams stood out – Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School.

The Brighton High School Science Olympiad team excelled in one event, finishing first in the state. Their victory came in the Scrambler event, where teams had to build a small car that traveled a certain distance. The team’s coach, Shannan Pereira, expressed pride in her students’ hard work and determination. Pereira has been coaching Science Olympiad at the high school for nine years and has seen her students grow into talented scientists and engineers.

Scranton Middle School also participated in the competition and earned two medals. In the Pentathlon, the team finished sixth, participating in a relay race with physical tasks and science questions. They also placed seventh in Dynamic Planets, a written test that covers topics like earthquakes and volcanoes. Pereira emphasized the dedication and effort of all the students involved, highlighting their hard work throughout the season.

Both teams held their own against some of the best teams in the state, showcasing their skills and passion for science. The competition was intense but ultimately rewarding for these two teams who worked tirelessly to achieve their goals.
