5,000 patents filed in the UAE

The UAE has experienced a significant increase in the number of patents registered, with a total of 5,000 and 3,415 patent applications registered in 2023 respectively. This represents an impressive 19.5% increase from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Economy. The Ministry has emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property as a key driver for sustainable development across all sectors, particularly in economic sectors.

In response to this need, the UAE has adopted a proactive approach to creating a legislative and regulatory environment that safeguards intellectual property rights and supports entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and projects. Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, highlighted the country’s success in establishing a pioneering legal framework for intellectual property that adheres to global standards.

The Ministry has implemented three laws to regulate and protect industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights. Additionally, it has launched 11 initiatives to support intellectual property applications. These measures have contributed significantly to fostering an environment that encourages intellectual property activities and innovation in the UAE.

To further promote awareness about national laws related to intellectual works, the Ministry of Economy is organizing a series of seminars, workshops, and competitions from April 22 to 30 on World Intellectual Property Day. These events aim to highlight how intellectual property rights play an essential role in driving innovation, supporting science and technology fields, and promoting sustainability in intellectual works.

This year’s theme for World Intellectual Property Day is “Innovation: Turning Ideas into Reality.” The Ministry of Economy is committed to providing support and opportunities for talented individuals with creative ideas who can transform these ideas into successful projects contributing positively to economic growth and sustainability.

Overall, the UAE’s focus on protecting intellectual property rights is crucial for promoting innovation and supporting sustainable development across all sectors. By implementing proactive legislation and initiatives aimed at safeguarding intellectual property rights while fostering creativity and entrepreneurship, the UAE continues its drive towards becoming a global hub for economic growth.
