His captaincy abilities were noticed early on, making him a top contender for the India captaincy post alongside Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. However, it was Iyer who stood out as a potential captain.
Prasad also praised Iyer’s growth as a leader during his stint as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The selectors saw potential in Iyer’s leadership skills and hope to see him excel in the role in the future.
