The scorching heat in April caused electricity bills for households in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to soar by 20-50% compared to March. This was more than double the amount charged in previous months. Mr. Nhat, a resident of Nha Be district in HCMC, was shocked to discover that his electricity bill in April had nearly doubled the average of the past months and increased by 30% compared to March. This was an unprecedented high for him since he started using electricity in his home.
Similarly, Mr. Cao from Go Vap experienced a significant increase in his electricity bill, despite keeping the temperature inside his house above 26-28 degrees Celsius as recommended. Many households across both cities were taken aback by the sudden surge in their bills, which were much higher than those of the same period last year.
The Electricity Regulatory Authority attributed this increase to the heightened demand for electricity due to the hot weather. Consumption reached new records during April, with usage coming close to 1 billion kWh. The prolonged heatwave led households to rely heavily on cooling equipment, which contributed significantly to the rise in energy consumption.
However, some consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with the current pricing structure and called for reforms. Experts have pointed out that a progressive pricing system can be unfair, as it charges higher prices based on how much energy is used.
As a result, there are discussions about changing the current six-step tariff system into a five-step tariff system that would address some of the issues raised by consumers.
In light of increasing electricity bills and ongoing heatwaves, consumers are encouraged to conserve energy and adjust their energy usage habits. Using air conditioners efficiently, selecting energy-efficient models, and maintaining appliances regularly can help reduce energy consumption and lower electricity bills.
