Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in stable condition after undergoing surgery to remove necrotic tissue caused by injuries from an attack earlier in the week. The latest medical report, released by Slovak authorities on Saturday, indicates that Fico’s health is improving following the operation.
Fico, who was shot by Juraj Cintula during a political rally, is now conscious and able to speak with his family and doctors. Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak announced at a press conference broadcast on Ta3 network that Fico’s prognosis is positive but he remains hospitalized for the next few days in Banská Bystrica, where the shooting took place.
The medical team treating Fico does not anticipate another surgical procedure at this time but are closely monitoring potential complications as his body continues to recover from the gunshots. Despite the positive outlook, there are still critical hours ahead as Fico’s body deals with the aftermath of the attack.
Cintula has been remanded to preventive custody due to the serious nature of the alleged crime. He has admitted to shooting Fico but claims it was not intended to be fatal. Cintula faces charges of attempted premeditated murder and could receive a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The case remains under investigation as Fico continues his recovery in the hospital.
