Warwick to host gathering of international artists and collectors celebrating glass art movement

The paperweight, often overlooked as a mere desk accessory, is actually considered an art form in its own right. Glass art and paperweight enthusiasts from all over New England will gather for the 2024 Biennial Paperweight Convention hosted by the Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA). This year’s convention, happening from May 15-18 at the Crowne Plaza, offers three free opportunities for the public to explore the art, history, and legacy of glassmaking through demonstrations, a paperweight fair, and a documentary screening.

Eric Jump, vice president of the PCA board, stresses that paperweights are often undervalued as a display of glass art skill by talented artists. The PCA, with roots on the East Coast, is thrilled to return to New England for this year’s convention.

The commemorative paperweights for this year are inspired by the state of Rhode Island. Artists William Manson Jr. and Clinton Smith have created limited edition paperweights featuring aspects of Rhode Island such as a flamework bouquet of violet blossoms and the Rhode Island Greening apple with blossoms, buds and leaves. These paperweights are available for purchase to support the artists and the PCA.

The convention will showcase displays and exhibits by national and New England-based glass artists. On Friday, May 17th there will be glassmaking demonstrations at Blackstone River Glass for the public to enjoy. Saturday, May 18th will feature a free screening of the documentary film “Paul J. Stankard: Flower & Flame” which delves into Stankard’s life and legacy. Additionally, there will be a free Paperweight Fair where attendees can meet the artists and explore thousands of paperweights.
