Hudyma recognized at Idaho Academy of Science and Engineering awards ceremony

Nick Hudyma, a professor of civil engineering at Boise State University, was recently honored by the Idaho Academy of Science and Engineering for his outstanding contributions to the field of engineering and scientific research. The organization recognized him for his trailblazing work in geotechnical engineering and commended him for his commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and championing inclusive practices which have inspired generations of engineers and scientists.

Hudyma is a research pioneer and visionary whose work focuses on the behavior of rock in both controlled laboratory settings and the field. He utilizes cutting-edge imaging techniques such as CT scanning, photogrammetry, and LiDAR, as well as geophysical measurements like acoustic emission and ultrasonics to understand the mysteries of rock mechanics. His research spans various areas including fracture characterization of cortical bone, identifying tensile failure precursors in rock, and studying ground properties and rockfall coefficients of restitution to inform protective measures against rockfall hazards.

With over 120 papers published in esteemed scientific venues, Hudyma’s intellectual curiosity is evident in his extensive publication record. His research has received support from organizations like the National Science Foundation and the Florida Department of Transportation. Beyond academia, Hudyma has also served as an expert witness for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Justice, and has contributed his expertise to complex construction projects. Additionally, he served as chair of the civil engineering department at Boise State from 2019-2022.
