The Capital Region is well represented in the postseason, with three men’s college lacrosse teams earning berths in the NCAA Division I and III tournaments. The University at Albany secured a spot in the NCAA Division I tournament after winning the America East tournament championship, and will face off against Sacred Heart at home on Wednesday. RPI and Union have also earned berths in their respective national tournaments.
RPI won the Liberty League tournament championship against RIT and secured an opening-round bye, while Union won a second-round tournament game against Stevenson (Md.) to host another home game as one of the hosts for the D-III tournament pods. Both RPI and Union have had impressive seasons, with RPI winning 16 out of 18 games, and Union winning 12 out of 17 games. However, both teams have struggled against St. Lawrence and Amherst this season.
The Great Danes have been on a hot streak, winning four consecutive games and seven out of their last nine. Their recent victories over Merrimack and Vermont earned them the home field advantage for their NCAA tournament opener against Sacred Heart. The game will take place on Wednesday at home for the Great Danes, who are excited to be back in the postseason after missing it last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
