The University of Michigan Health System has announced plans to purchase vacant land at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy for the construction of a multi-specialty facility. The 7.8-acre property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, was previously owned by Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC and will be acquired for $4.42 million.
The facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services, aimed at expanding clinical services and patient access in Oakland County. Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge sees this as a way to establish a presence in southeast Michigan and provide easier access to their world-class care for metro Detroit residents.
The move is part of U-M Health’s effort to establish a broad network of care across the state, allowing more Michigan residents to access their services close to home. President of U-M Health, David Miller, believes that the facility will be a hub for advanced clinical programs like multi-disciplinary cancer care and bring innovative clinical programs to a new community of patients.
The headquarters, which has been empty for over 15 years, was set for demolition last fall. However, U-M Health plans to use this new investment to provide better access to their services and expand their reach in the area. The new facility in Troy is seen as a strategic location to bring innovation and quality healthcare closer to patients in Southeast Michigan.
