Food deliverers working for Uber Eats platform are set to stage a strike on Tuesday and Wednesday. The strike action is being led by the Brussels courier collective, The House of Deliverers, and has the support of the Christian trade union ACV.
The couriers are demanding a pay increase of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled, citing that fees have not increased since 2019 despite a 20 percent increase in inflation. In addition to pay increase, the couriers are also criticizing Uber for not consulting with them on their employment status and government’s lack of regulation in this area. Despite labor court ruling in favor of considering meal deliverers as employees, no changes have been made yet.
The meal deliverers have previously requested consultation with Uber but have not received a response. The strike actions are part of ongoing efforts to advocate for better working conditions and fair compensation for food deliverers. Couriers are determined to make their voices heard and push for positive changes in their industry. Several hundred participants are expected to take part in the strike, with a focus on Brussels but also reaching out to couriers in other cities like Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.
