The recent agreement between the US, Japan, and the Philippines has led to extensive military exercises in the South China Sea. Japanese and European soldiers are acting as observers, with Marcos believing that these exercises will change the dynamics of Southeast Asia, Asia, and the South China Sea in the future.
However, China sees things differently. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stated that the exercises will have a destructive effect on regional security. The Philippine government responded by pointing out China’s aggressive behavior, exaggerated claims, and construction of military bases in the region.
The People’s Liberation Army has been creating artificial islands in the South China Sea and building military bases. This has escalated tensions between China and the Philippines, who are rehearsing storming fortified islands to demonstrate their capabilities to China.
There is concern in Washington over the war of words between China and the Philippines as there is a high risk of military escalation in the South China Sea. While there is hope that increased US military presence will cease attacks on Philippine ships, China has responded by sending more ships to disputed areas and increasing patrols.
