In a recent announcement, Microsoft has confirmed a bug in its Windows operating system’s latest security update package released in April 2024. The issue is causing VPN connections to be interrupted in desktop and server versions.
VPNs or Virtual Private Networks are tools that create a secure, encrypted connection between a device and a remote server operated by the VPN provider. They are widely used for remote work, bypassing online censorship, and downloading files securely.
The company issued an alert to users warning that Windows devices may experience VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 security update or non-security preview update. Although Microsoft has not yet identified the root cause of these issues, it recommended using the “Get Help” app from the search box for assistance. The affected versions include Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 and later.
Microsoft has provided users with a temporary solution to resolve VPN issues until a final patch is released. However, removing cumulative updates to fix these network virtual private support issues may also remove fixes for security vulnerabilities. This highlights Microsoft’s history of investigating and releasing updates to address VPN problems, emphasizing their recurrent nature.
Given that Microsoft’s operating system accounts for 68.15% of the market in desktop, tablet, and console versions, resolving these VPN connection failures promptly is crucial. Microsoft continues to work on providing solutions and patches for any issues that arise in its operating system updates.
