Walmart to shut down 51 health centers and end virtual care service

In 2019, Walmart launched its health centers with the goal of providing affordable healthcare services to its customers. However, despite this noble aim, the company has struggled to achieve profitability due to the challenges posed by the reimbursement environment and operating costs. This has led Walmart to close all 51 of its health centers in five states.

Despite this setback, Walmart continues to expand its healthcare offerings. In March 2023, the company announced plans to open 28 new health centers in Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Kansas City. However, due to the lack of profitability in its existing health centers, Walmart has decided to close these locations instead.

While there is no specific date for when the health centers will close, employees who worked at these locations are eligible to transfer to any other Walmart or Sam’s Club location. Despite this closure, Walmart remains committed to providing accessible healthcare services through its almost 4,600 pharmacies and more than 3,000 vision centers across the United States.
