IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel will not cover Indiana Fever, according to IndyStar spokesperson speaking to CNN.

Caitlin Clark’s introduction to the WNBA team at her first press conference was marred by an uncomfortable incident involving IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel. During the session, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands towards Clark, which she often did during her college basketball career. When asked if he liked it, Doyel responded, “I like that you’re here,” and suggested she start doing it to him for them to get along.

Doyel later apologized for his comments, acknowledging that they were inappropriate and awkward. However, this was not enough to prevent him from covering the Indiana Fever. On Tuesday, an IndyStar spokesperson shared a statement with CNN announcing that Doyel would not be covering the team during the season. The reason for this decision remains unclear as Gannett, the parent company of the IndyStar, did not respond to inquiries about the matter.

When contacted by CNN, Doyel did not comment on the situation. His last published article was on the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL draft in late April. Meanwhile, Clark and the Indiana Fever are set to start their 25th regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Connecticut Sun.
