US and Mexico retract joint bid for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosting duties

The US Soccer Federation and Mexican Football Federation have withdrawn their joint bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, opting instead to focus on a bid for the 2031 edition of the tournament. With this decision, there are now two remaining bids for the 2027 tournament – one from Brazilian Football Confederation and a joint bid from Royal Belgian Football Association, Royal Netherlands Football Association and German Football Association.

The announcement of the winning bid will take place at the 74th FIFA Congress in May. Cindy Parlow Cone, President of US Soccer, emphasized the importance of hosting a World Cup tournament and highlighted how meticulous preparation can positively impact global audiences. The decision to shift the bid to 2031 aims to provide an equitable experience for players, fans and stakeholders, contributing to the growth of women’s soccer globally.

Despite the change in plans, there will still be an extensive calendar of international soccer competitions in North America in the coming years. Mexico will host FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 while Canada and Mexico co-host FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2026. Ivar Sisniega, president of Mexican Football Federation, highlighted how hosting men’s World Cup in 2026 has provided valuable experience for their country’s infrastructure and fan base that can contribute to a successful event for women’s football in future.
