The World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers 2024, held in Istanbul until May 12, represent the final opportunity for wrestlers to secure a spot in the upcoming Summer Games. In each weight class, three Paris 2024 Olympic quotas are up for grabs, with the top two finalists earning their countries a quota. The third quota will be awarded to the winner of the playoff between the two bronze medallists in the weight class.
At the continental qualifiers, only the top two wrestlers in each division were able to secure quotas. Masuda, originally from Japan but now representing Australia, is the current Oceania champion in her category but was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the African & Oceania qualifiers. Similarly, Barns, the Oceania champion in his weight class, was defeated in the quarter-finals at the continental qualifiers in Alexandria. Despite these setbacks, Australia has won three Olympic wrestling medals – one silver and two bronze – and is looking forward to making a comeback at Tokyo 2020.
